Friends of Landon Bay

                                                  SPRING 2010

Landon Bay was a hub of activity all winter.  Work was done throughout the Biosphere Reserve by another hard working JOB CREATION crew headquartered in our barn/workshop
.

During stormy days the crew made up a large number of bird nesting box kits as well as many finished nesting boxes.  When the “Friends” who volunteer from the ranks of clients at Community Living restart their efforts, building finished nesting boxes will become one of their main efforts.  Over the past few years, Friends of Landon Bay have hung hundreds of nesting boxes through out our property and many others were donated to school groups using our facility.  Friends also built sawhorses and saw bucks for use around the Biosphere.  The nesting box kits and sawhorses are built using donated recycled lumber.

Still other “Friends” help refurbish the lumber, nails are removed, then the boards are measured and marked with their size. Finally, the ready to use lumber is stored in our workshop on Cemetery Road.  Many thanks to Local Contractor, Kevin Burgess for the thoughtful donation of this good used material, ready for our recycling efforts.

Speaking of re-cycling, “Friends” involved in lumber restoration have filled many containers with hardware they remove.  This is added to the large metal re-cycling collection adjacent to the workshop.  Job Creation crews gather tons of scrap metal during cleanups throughout the Biosphere.  Each Fall for the past 3 years a commercial recycler picks up this used scrap, hauls it to Kingston and recycles the scrap metals into re-usable material. Another win for Mother Earth.

Grass, grass, grass is always in need of attention this time of year.  Several Friends of Landon Bay have jumped on the mowers and cut endless acres of fast growing green grass.  Their help is so gladly received, it helps us present the grounds for use by visiting school groups and other interested visitors from around the world.  Retired Gananoque businessman, Norm Parish has been a big help in the grass cutting department.  While looking for a new career, Ray Singleton has spent several hours mowing grass and retiree Jim Ehrhart continues to help run the big John Deere mower.  Other “Friends who volunteer their professional expertise throughout the year are Jim Dobson, John Cooke, Ed Jenkins, Oliver Hill, Mike Mitchell, Earle Thompson, Kip Cunningham, Daryl Dingman. Several seasonal campers have also joined the “Friends” volunteer brigade; Brenda Crowler as well as, Lloyd and Lucy Foubert keep busy doing volunteer work throughout the camping season.  All you folks are due a large dose of gratitude for your continuing volunteer efforts.

Friends of Landon Bay come in a great variety of ages.  Young and old are all welcome to spend time on the beautiful grounds of our park.Gananoque Secondary School student Chris Dennison spent many hours in our Sign Shop, located in the Cemetery Road workshop.  Another G.S. S. student Sarah Dennison, drew the original map (still in use) which identified trail routes and intersections.

As you can see, Friends Of Landon Bay continue to be major contributors to the success of Landon Bay Centre.  As we gear up for another season, discover how you can invest some of your spare time helping with our goal of preserving the land and providing environmental education.contact:
